Menstrual symptoms comes in many forms and severities. Most common symptoms are Cramping, lower back pain, digestion related symptoms and many more.
Many women live with their menstruation symptoms as if “its natural and unavoidable”. Most medical Dr. would think of and prescribe contraception pill, that in many cases do take away some or most of the symptoms, but not necessarily treat the problem that brought the symptoms on in the first place
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture address these symptoms by differentiating the symptoms to different “syndrome”, (groups of symptoms with a common root).
As the approach in TCM and Acupuncture is very specific, and treats the roots of the symptoms, the success rate and ability to resolve the issues is great.
Different forms of daily stress are the most common root that leads to menstrual symptoms and PMS. Acupuncture is one of the best treatments for stress.
Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition women suffer from at all ages. As many other syndromes, PMS symptoms are commonly seen by many women a few days before the onset of their menstruation.
PMS symptoms can be both physical and emotional. An example of physical symptoms include digestive problems, bloating, bowel movement issues, breast distension and sensitivity, lower back pain, and lower abdomen pain. The pains can be general achy/distended like pain that is coming and going, Emotional symptoms manifest as irritability, frustration, lack of patience, depression, and anxiety.
From a medical point of view, PMS referred to as a hormonal imbalance. Western medical science does not have a very clear understanding of PMS,
In Chinese medicine we refer to PMS mostly as a form of Liver/GB Qi stagnation. The Qi (the energy that flows in the body,) needs to be flowing free and “smoothly” through the body at all time. When the Qi is not flowing freely we can get many different symptoms, and PMS is a common one. Acupuncture treatment is a great treatment for PMS, in many cases there is no need for herbal remedies or other treatments.
